The Ones You Love

I hope you all spent a wonderful Valentine's Day with the ones you love. I traipsed into the city to hang with my guy for a couple of days. I made my homemade Valentine's kind of at the last minute. February creeped up on me somehow. My cards this year were VERY simple since I didn't have much time. In fact, family members out of town will be getting theirs late. It's never too late to tell someone you love them, though, right? Now, don't get me wrong, they hear it all the time from me. I would show you said Valentine cards, but the photos are in my big camera that is still at the house. It's a problem. I'll have to show you in a couple of days. Does anybody out there make homemade Valentine's anymore? Did you write a love letter to your sweetheart? We went out to dinner and then our usual date spot, Barnes and Noble. I saw this adorable wreath in the current Mollie Makes issue. Very cute, isn't it? Should I dare say, plan ahead for next year? Nah, but I think I will "pin" it into my Valentine Board to keep track of it.

Winter Decorating

Since this week is Valentine's week, I thought I'd show you my "winter" decorations before I change them. I have to pretend its winter, although it's fairly cool today here. I started with my little collection of ironstone pitchers.

I bought the little deer for a snow globe before Christmas. This is where he ended up.

This is a photo of my girls and their daddy ice skating in our back yard when we lived in Massachusetts.

Hope you liked my little peek at winter. I'll be adding some hearts to the mix this week.

Pretty Pendants

There has been a lot going on around here lately. I've been on jury duty for the last 4 weeks, which has been intense. Thank goodness that finished up today. There has been little going on at home during that time. On one day, however, our electrician put in our new pendant lamps. I won't go into why this decision was tricky, but choices were limited in order to get matching lights in the master bathroom.

I was going to stencil in the powder room but with all this reflection, I don't think it would look right.

Laundry Room Decorations

This is my lame attempt at making the clothes pin wreath I found on Pinterest. Somehow it is NOT as easy as it looks. It would also look much better on a pretty blue wall as in Kimba's laundry room. Here are her instructions. I can just imagine pins popping off in the night. I have no idea how she got them all to lay so perfectly.

I decided to stop waiting for the perfect idea to come my way and just get these decorations up on the wall. I am, you know, having a Super Bowl party and I'm just sure everyone's going to be in the laundry room. Well, having company coming does make me get things finished. I have a small, beginning collection of vintage dust pans. Instead of waiting till there is the perfect number to make a lovely grid, I started with what I have. Three. That's it, three makes a collection, doesn't it? I use the tin box for my dryer sheets. The jar below if for laundry soap. Sorry the photo is so dark. There is absolutely no time of the day when this room is bright. So, this is about as good as it gets.

I'm also using my cute, old towel bar from Curious Sofa when she had a brick and mortar store. I sure do miss going there when visiting my parents in Kansas City. I still want to wallpaper or paint this room one day. I really love a Farrow and Ball wallpaper, but that's quite expensive for a laundry room.

Wouldn't that be cute?

Paper Back Wreath

Sorry for the lack of posting lately. Jury duty has recently waylaid any creative juices or distractions. I've very slowly finished making a book page wreath for DD2's bedroom.

My daughter really liked her Christmas wreath we used above her night stand during the Holidays. She wanted a non-holiday replacement. So, I searched Pinterest, of course, and located several lovely options. She voted on this wreath by Living with Lindsay.

After a trip to the thrift store for a silly romance novel or two and JoAnn's for a foam wreath,

we were in business.

Folding and folding and folding.

Then gluing and gluing and even more gluing.

Now, the voracious reader has a book page wreath for her haven.

Before The Green

I thought I'd show you an update on our front yard project, obviously before any plants are added.

We resurfaced the front porch and took out the sidewalk.

We added a faux stream bed into the actual drainage area.

We moved boulders from another part of our property. Now, that was a huge job!

We widened the driveway. Part of this is going to be redone. It didn't quite work out right.

In the distance you can see my urn fountain.

This urn had a crack, so we have a different urn and it has yet to get hooked up. More on that later.

We added beautiful stone steps down to the back.

Here's just a peek at the before picture.

As you can tell, I've been really quiet lately. Somewhat because I haven't had much to say. Also, I've been a little busy. This week I've been in jury selection. I still don't know the outcome, but probably will know tomorrow. If I'm selected, which is highly likely, I really won't be around. I am hoping to do a little crafting this weekend. My DD2 likes the Christmas wreath in her room, so we're substituting it with a book wreath like this. Since she LOVES to read, we thought it would be appropriate.

The Paperwhite bulbs I bought to use for Christmas didn't get planted until yesterday. I think they'll make a beautiful winter bouquet. I wish I had seen this pretty photo before I planted them. What old project will you finish this weekend? Have a long and lovely one!

Super Bowl Prep

We've decided to host a Super Bowl Party at our new house this year. It is also going to be a farewell for a fun couple that are moving to Texas. Boo hiss! Well, back to the party. I've verbally invited several people, but have ordered these fun invitations.

Stacie has a lot of simple, cute products. You can visit her at her Etsy store.

I'm anxious to see how mine turned out.

Since the entertainment is provided, the next most important element is the food. I think I'm making tacos. I use a recipe I found YEARS ago from Flylady's website. It's a Crockpot recipe that you HAVE to try. It's amazing. I like it better with beef than chicken, Spicy Mexican Beef. It's not all that spicy. OH MY, this is fantastic. I will also make my homemade salsa, which is basically a Pico de Gallo. I'm sure my guests will bring lots of other foods, but I've found some fun ideas on Pinterest lately, when I should be doing other things. It just sucks me in. Here are some more ideas.

Holiday Visit

When my kids were visiting after Christmas we made a visit to Old Town Temecula for some shopping. Our first stop and favorite is Temecula Spice Merchant. We were so busy shopping that I forgot to take any pictures. It's absolutely worth the visit. Next was a visit to the Temecula Cheese Shop, again no pictures. At the Lavender Company, I finally got my act together.

The Lavender Shop was new to me and very lovely. Their lip balm is amazing!

The next stop was Temecula Olive Oil.

I took no pictures of their fabulous olive oil flavors.

Lastly we visited The Wool Lady in her new location.

She dyes her own alpaca from a local ranch.

Another day was spent at Disneyland.

It was CRAZY crowded. I think all of the families of the Rose Parade bands were there that day.

We stayed for the beautiful lights at the end of the day. The kids went home all too soon.

Popcorn, how I love you.

Considering EVERYBODY seems to be back to watching their calories or counting their points these days, I thought I'd use my new microwave popcorn popper that I got for Christmas. I crave a salty, crunchy snack in the afternoons, do you? Fresh popcorn tastes AMAZING! We're so used to microwave popcorn that I'd forgotten. I remember my Mom scraping the fry pan over the electric coils on the stove to make popcorn when I was little. With this popper, you add the amount of butter you want onto the lid. There is no oil used which makes for a very good low fat snack. I'm afraid this could become a habit.

Starting Out Right?

We had a lovely show of eight balloons this morning.

Evidently people were starting off the new year with a fun balloon ride. I'd love to do that someday.

We're starting off 2012 with 82 degree weather. It's definitely lovely, but oh so strange for January.

I started counting points yesterday for breakfast and lost that motivation by dinner time. This morning I made my easy cinnamon rolls while watching the Rose Bowl Parade. I think next year the New Year breakfast tradition may need to be steel cut oatmeal instead. Maybe I'll start that tomorrow.

These poinsettia's are looking like I'm feeling, a little worn out. Although they're definitely looking much skinnier than when I bought them. That's not a problem I'm having. It's time to take a little better care of myself and pay more attention to exercise and eating. Oh maybe that really should say, NOT EATING. Everybody must be on the same page since EVERY commercial is about dieting. Biggest Loser also begins again tomorrow. Teresa is obviously thinking about this too. How about you, what's your plan?

From Our Street to Yours

Construction of our 2011 Trailer Park began on Thursday. DD1 had a very fancy front walkway. To the left of path, the cottage has it's own chicken, you can't see it's tail or you'd recognize him. I won't divulge what is on her roof. My SIL decided to help out. Enough said.

His trailer looks pretty good from the front, even with his monster hitch.

But he got very creative on the back with Christmas Lights. At least I think that's what he meant them to be. We're just happy that he participated, unlike another MAN in the house.

This little cottage was mine. I forgot her wheels. Oh no, she's actually got her skirt on over them.

I particularly enjoyed the special addition of my back yard fireplace.

DD2 had a fence, pillars and a lovely pine tree.

She wanted some winter sun and added a beach chair and umbrella.

You can do what you want in your own trailer park.

You need to concentrate when designing your own trailer.

Roger's Gardens Visit

I visited Roger's Gardens in Irvine with a friend today for the first time.

Boy oh boy was it beautiful! The Christmas arrangements inside the front door were stunning.

I loved the addition of lime green into this wreath.

Cyclamen is a Christmas staple in Southern California gardening.

Evidently this is a Southern California snowman.

Did you know that Santa has felted boots?

This poinsettia is absolutely gorgeous! Unfortunately I do not remember it's name.

These rain chains were one of my favorite things.

I really, really would like one, but they are oh so pricey!

This one was a little different.

Of course they have beautiful plants! These are Aeonium's.

They have beautiful gardens.

It was a gorgeous day, but then the clouds rolled in and it started to rain.

Back inside there were collectibles and Christmas decorations. These adorable bears were by Vickie Smyers for Bethany Lowe designs. They were so sweet!

Glitter and sparkles were everywhere.

This photo is blurry, but I wanted you to see the tree made with jewelry, in this case watches.

I think it was $900.00!

On the way out we noticed these adorable trains that were delighting an excited little boy.

After our little foray to Roger's Gardens we had lunch at the Cheesecake Factory. I think this needs to become a yearly field trip at Christmas time. It was a very lovely day!

Around The House

Vintage Christmas cards from both sides of our family.

On the island are antique ornaments from a garage sale and my Fitz and Floyd Santa pitcher.

There's another one of those ornaments again which I explained how to make here.

Sitting on this counter is a Mark Roberts Fairy and yummy Hammonds candy canes.

Salt and pepper shaker and napkins from Pottery Barn make the kitchen table festive.

My angel that has yet to earn her wings, I made her back in the mid-1990's.

This is my first attempt at a hot chocolate bar. Yum.

Pinterest To The Rescue!

Well, I know you have to be as addicted to Pinterest as I am. If not, you should be. With all of the holiday parties going on, it's an invaluable resource. Tonight my friend Kathy brought "Crack Bread" to our party. That's not really it's name, of course. But you wouldn't know it the way everyone scarfed it down. It was so yummy. It's really called Cheddar Bacon Ranch Pulls from Steph at Plain Chicken. DD2 and I are going to make it for her party on Wednesday.

Beachy Christmas

I finally worked on the third mantle, using much of what was already on it. A couple of months ago, I bought a plastic bag at the thrift store with these garlands in it. I assumed they were plastic. I was so excited to open it yesterday to find they are glass.

Three mantles finished. Now, I'll include it into the mantle party at Southern Hospitality and Ten June.

"O Night Divine"

For the last three years I have shared with you the favor we've made for our church's Christmas Home Tour. This year we decided on the theme, "O Night Divine", a phrase from the song O Holy Night.

Music was definitely necessary. This is real music, but from an old cantata book, not precious sheet music. I began by trimming it down a little, then folding it fan style, probably 1/2-3/4" wide. You'll need two sheets for each ornament. A bone folder comes in very handy for this as well as a glue stick, hot glue and binder clips.

We glittered 4 inch stars to go with the Night Theme, of course. We bought glittered paper for them and glittered them even more. I used Martha Stewart's glitter. She has beautiful colors. Then I cut little medallions with the Cricut. The colored ones are 1-3/4" with the cream color being 1-1/4". I used a variety of colors. Why make it easy when you can change it up? Basically it's because I couldn't make up my mind. I liked several combinations.

I punched holes and tied crochet thread for hangers.

There were several color combinations to choose from.

These would be cute on the tree or anywhere.
They could say all sorts of Christmas phrases, whatever is appropriate for your home.

I really love the gold and gray one. I wanted to "age" them and glitter the edges but ran out of time.

Up, Up And Away

It's been very windy here lately. You've probably heard about some of the damage on the news. Wind IS weather out here. Took me a few years to realize that. Well, this morning we woke up to some beautiful clouds and fog in the valley. It sort of looks like two mountain ranges in our view.

Then later in the morning, some brave souls were flying hot air balloons really, really high and much closer than we've ever seen.

We've seen hot air balloons before. You can see how far away they usually are on this post.
All I can say, is that they are very, very brave.

We Interrupt This Program . . .

So, in the middle of all the Christmas preparations which are well underway, I took a little detour yesterday. I met Morgan, my landscape designer, at The Madd Potter in Encinitas, California. We did a little pot shopping. If you know me personally, I hope you would find this funny.

There were some beauties.

I love this tile. We may incorporate it onto the front porch.

This big guy is going to be an Urn Fountain.

These five are what we finally decided on. Unfortunately, one is kind of hidden.

The work on our front hardscape is to start today. It's almost 11 a.m. and I've seen hide nor hair of the contractor so far. It's crazy windy here so maybe that's why. I'll have updates as we go. Should be all done by the end of January. Okay, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

It's a Start

I am SO NOT COMPLAINING. Just stating a fact that I have three mantles to decorate for Christmas this year. Compared to one for the last 5 years, it's a little bit fun and a little bit CA-RA-ZY. I'm still loving these thrift store books I used in my Fall decor, so I'm working off a red and brown color palette this year in the Family Room.

A little glitz, a little nature and some great red cardinals from Target's Smith and Hawken collection.

I also love my fun and funky wire and pearl tree on the left side of my mantle. There may be some stockings hanging on here before all is said and done. I haven't decided where to put them yet. We have our kiddos all here this year so we'll need FIVE stockings!!! YIPPEE!

The Christmas tree is only partially decked. There are a ton more ornaments to put on it.

I decorated the Living Room mantle with a little less color because of the dark brown walls.

I don't think the stockings will fit on here. It just may be good enough for this year.

Later I added some sparkly birds and garland for a little more bling.

This little entry table will see a poinsettia and probably some fresh greens soon.

Well, toodle ooo, I've got a lot more to do.

Girlfriend Time

After my college reunion I headed to Florida for a little girlfriend time.

We now live in three different states, so time together is precious.

This is Oscar.

He was loads of fun to be around.

We cooked a little.

We went to a cooking class.

Where we tasted this amazing Apple and Cranberry pie.

We had a lovely lunch at the beach.

Of course there was a little shopping!

I don't watch sunrises on my vacation, or any other day for that matter. I am, however, willing to watch a beautiful sunset. On the beach. In Florida. Eating a fantastic dinner, with special girlfriends.

College Reunion

I went to a small Christian college where we knew almost all of our classmates. So a reunion for our college class is a pretty big deal. Last weekend was a "big" reunion year for us.

This guy, not the cow, and I go back much further, to my 5th grade. He and his brother used to call me names, "Twiggy Tree Truck" sticks in my mind. I think they added the "tree truck" because they realized that Twiggy was a compliment at the time.

We had many meals together. This one at the Taco Truck was very fun.

The old dorm, which is to be knocked down for a newer version soon.

We dedicated this gazebo to a special classmate that lost his life in a tragic accident.

I was even surprised by my cousin, that popped by to say hello.

Sorry for all the self portraits. I just wanted to give you a sense of the special weekend I had where there was laughter and stories shared. Lots of memories were stirred to the surface and we concluded that God is good and we are blessed. I traveled on to Florida for a few days after that. More on that tomorrow!

Hey there, I'm back from my lovely visit with friends and will be back to blogging soon. Above is the beautiful sunset from Naples, Florida where I was visiting friends. This is probably the prettiest photo I took. So, I'll show you a little of my travels next week, but won't bore you with my vacation photos yet again. I hope all is well with everyone. A Little This and A Little That

I promised I'd show you what I bought last Friday at the Matilda's Mouse Antique Sale.

This little corner just called out for an old birdcage. Can you believe I didn't even have one?

Surprising, I know.

This is a small, dark powder room. I recently painted it Sherwin Williams Sedate Gray (SW6169) to lighten it up. It looks green in this picture, but it's more of a blue gray. It was dark brown. This is the room I want to stencil to give it some interest. The mirror that you can only partially see is a recent thrift store purchase that is a perfect fit. Still can't find my stencil, I went to Bora Bora instead of looking.

I found a couple of old clocks to add to the shelves. I think my cousin had some influence on me here.

This old egg basket is going to eventually be filled with old baseballs for the Man Cave. I'll show you that another time. It's sort of out of my decorating comfort zone, you could say. Good thing DH isn't picky.

I ordered this bench from One Kings Lane a couple months ago.

I thought it would be perfect for the end of the bed. I'm so glad I was right. It will come in handy.

Christmas Antique Sale

We made our monthly trek to Matilda's Mouse this past weekend. There were six of us this time. I think everybody went home with some treasure. The theme for the month was, of course, Christmas!

I loved this belt tying up the books.

Lime green and pink was a common color palette. The place was packed. It was impossible to take a picture without somebody in the background. This cute tree was "planted" in a plant stand, featured moss, pots, tools and sprinkler heads.

You should've seen this massive frame around this angel.

It was pretty difficult to get a picture of, but it was really beautiful.

This bowl was below the beach tree. It had big, fat, weathered rope around it's base.

I really should've taken a picture of it.

Baby Jesus was not for sale.

An owl tree. Owls are still everywhere these days.

This was another very clever book display.

Here Fishy Fishy

We headed out to feed the sharks and stingrays! I was thinking from the boat or maybe in a cage.

NO SIR-EE!

It was a little freaky, to tell you the truth.

There are FIVE lemon sharks in this one photo! They must not like humans, because there were plenty of us to choose from. I have many photos with swimmers, but you don't need photo overload.

We also fed the stingrays. They were a little more up close and personal. That was freaky in itself.

We went kayaking.

Ken went snorkeling in the resort lagoons. Not bad at all.

Beach Beauty

I love the diversity of different beaches. The beaches in Bora Bora had mostly coral and white shells. Every time I visit a beach, I bring home a little bottle of sand. They all look different.

I couldn't get over the shades of color in the water, the palm trees and the sky.

I took a beginner set of pastels and a drawing pad. There were definitely not enough tints and shades of blue to capture these colors. Thank you Erin for the suggestion. I was trying to find my inner "arteest". I struggled, that's for sure, but it was a fun thing to do on the beach, in the shade.

We spent one fun day on an island where you could see the entire thing from one side to the other. We were taught how to tie a pareo in different ways, we could ride a jet ski, get a massage, eat amazing food, have floaty time, kayak, and learn a polynesian dance.

These girls were having so much fun, but I think the random husband stole the show.

He gave me his floaty afterwards so I could join in.

I think this is enough for today. Don't worry, there is more.

Vacation Entertainment

Besides all the fun excursions we went on; fishing, snorkeling, swimming with sharks, petting stingrays, the spa and the beach, we had other great entertainment. We brought books and of course, I brought some socks to knit.

There were kayaks,

long boats (not sure the official name),

and sail boats, to name a few.

There was the occasional rain storm,

That's what you're in for if you come back to visit me this week. That's about all I have for you. I'm going to relive my amazing vacation and stretch it out as long as possible. My DD2 wanted to take a trip to Bates again this year.

She has to put up with so much!

This is my favorite of the scarecrow competition.

They have a corn maze for kids. We were kind of tall for it and it is basically a hay bale maze. We also had a little difficulty getting out even though we could see!

Along with pumpkins, Bates has all kinds of nuts which I bought, but didn't photograph. However, I did take pictures of the pretty barrels of candy.

So, again, I repeat. . . orange you sorry you missed Bates?

This is the same house as the first picture. I love the vine covered pergola and little cafe table and chairs. We will not have any grass, however. We also don't have stone walls, shoot. Somehow, I just know it, we may be able to get this look. I'll keep you posted!

Out of the Fall Box

Sometimes using what you have and being spontaneous just works. Did you know you could save Fall leaves for a very long time? These leaves were pressed from our yard outside Boston from the early 90's. They aren't quite a vivid as PSE made them. But, they're still beautiful after all these years.

Reese's Bars

We met friends for lunch today. Friend's we haven't seen in at least 6 years, and they only live about 90 minutes away! We ate at Tresino's again, my neighbors' new Italian restaurant that is F A B U L O U S! I ate there three times this week. Woah, don't tell. Hey, I'm trying to keep their business going!

Anyway, back to the visiting friends. Since they were coming to the house after lunch I wanted a little something sweet to offer them. Did I think about this ahead of time? Of course not. I thought a Fallish pie would be yummy. Nope, no apples, or peaches. I thought about a pumpkin pie, but, no evaporated milk. I thought about Williams-Sonoma pumpkin bars, but no yellow cake mix. I did not have time to run to the store. Running to the store is a long run, just an FYI. So, I made Reese's Bars instead. They are not particularly Fallish, but are indeed very good. You just might have all the ingredients in your pantry, right now!

REESE'S BARS

2 cups powdered sugar

1 cup peanut butter (I use creamy)

1 cup finely crushed graham crackers (about 6 full crackers)

1 stick melted margarine/butter (I use butter)

I used a mortal and pestle to crush the crackers. This is not fine yet, by the way.

A food processor would be MUCH faster.

Mix ingredients together.

Spread on the bottom of a small cookie sheet. This can be tricky, but the back of a metal spoon helps. Melt a 12 oz bag of chocolate chips and spread over the top of the peanut butter mixture. Place in refrigerator for 10 minutes. Take out and cut into squares. Replace in refrigerator until hard and ready to serve. These need to stay cold.

So rich, so fast and so good!

Light Search

I'm shopping for lighting for several uses in my home. These particular lights are for over my kitchen island. There is a picture of it at the bottom of this post. Right now all I have are several pot lights. I think the kitchen really needs something more interesting. Does any body have any advice on shopping for this type of light?

This is a Shades of Light industrial cage light fixture. I love this cluster of industrial lights. It has a cap that is 10 inches which would cover the pot light hole adequately. Although, I'm not sure if it's fancy enough for my kitchen.

Here is another Shades of Light fixture. It is the Hook and Line Chandelier in Gilded Gold. I'm kind of loving the gold and simplicity with this one.

Lighting Universe has this pretty Gothic Lantern. I could go the lantern route, but is it overdone? I need a fairly open light in order to not block our fabulous view.

Circa Lighting has this pretty chandelier.

Beesthorpe Chandelier is from Currey and Company at Layla Grace. I'm kind of favoring this funky light. Sort of fancy and rustic at the same time.

The Beauregard Chandelier is another pretty option.

Here are two pictures of my kitchen. Both are options for a special light, obviously, not both. The concern with putting the light over the table is how much it would block the view. So, what do you think? Do you have a favorite? Any advice for this lighting rookie?

What A Weekend!

This last weekend, my VERY healthy husband had a health scare and spent two days in the hospital. I'm so thankful that he was home when it happened so I could take care of him. I'm convinced it would've been worse if A) he wasn't home and B) he wasn't in such good shape. Thank you Lord!

Also, you've seen pictures and heard reports all over the media about Marathon Mom, Amber Miller. Amber is an amazing young woman, very disciplined and smart. We are good friends with the family and are convinced that she did the right thing for her. We're very proud of her. Here is the link to just one of the many stories.

Hmmm, in light of these two weekend events, I think I better go turn on the treadmill. . .

Autumn Tutorials

It was nasty and raining yesterday and I was in the city with nothing much to do. It only takes so long to clean a little apartment. I didn't feel like running around, which always ends up costing money, so I surfed the internet for longer than usual. As you well know, if you read blogs, that there is an endless supply of inspiration available. Here are a few things I came across.

If you haven't seen this already, it's a beautiful rose bouquet made from Fall leaves. People are SO smart! Here is the tutorial if you live in a place with an abundance of Fall leaves, which I don't anymore. I've raked my share, that's for sure having lived in New England for five years among several midwestern states. I do miss a gorgeous Fall.

While this isn't specifically a Fall tutorial, it would be beautiful in Fall colors or even just shades of cream to warm up your chair for the Winter. I need to beef up my crochet skills. You can find instructions at Attic 24.

We've been working with a landscape designer recently to draw up a plan for our new yard. It is a totally blank slate. I had remembered coming across a BHG article that showed a cedar hot tub. Could I find that cut out article anywhere? Not on your life. Several months later, ta da! Yesterday, I found it. In a pile of other magazine tear sheets. Also included was the page of sources for the magazine. EXCEPT that article, wouldn't you know?

Comes Around. . . Do you remember, back in the day when we stenciled EVERYTHING? I even had my own stencils that I sold to local "country stores". My partner and I even stenciled rooms in both a local Kansas City Show Home and a Parade of Homes. That was before everybody got into it and die cut stencils were everywhere. It was also before I started moving. Stencils of one kind or another have been available all these years. I'm planning on digging out ye ole stencil brushes and trying it again. Here and some pictures I'm using for inspiration.

We have a new addition to our Master Bedroom. It's the Cardiff Tufted Armchair from Pottery Barn. It's poised next to the books for reading, facing the window for gazing and in the quiet bedroom for dozing. I think HH is going to love it! Do you have a favorite spot in your house?

Fall Decorating

I now have three mantles to fuss with, which can be fun. I'm attempting to use what I have, some of which is still in boxes. Other things are being used on shelves or in another room. So, this is just my first year for Fall fluffing. I'll get my act together before too long. I've gotta get better organized so I can retrieve things. Somewhere there's a big bin of pinecones. Somewhere. . .

Appearances can be deceiving. These radishes were beautiful at the Farmer's Market yesterday. I'm not a fan of their flavor, though. People can be like that. Try, Try Again

I found this old, very old, ancient photo of me knitting at my Grandparents house probably about 4th grade or so. I wish I had kept this up all these years. I again took a knitting class in about 1986 when we lived for one year in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Now that was a place to take up knitting! Way back then, the knitting shop was so fabulous. Which was unusual. I was enthralled with fibers even then. I'll have to pull out the "lovely" fushia colored vest I made. I know I have it somewhere. Then I stopped knitting again. Until about 2000, when skinny scarves came back with a vengeance. I knew my girls would again, wear something I had made. Since then I have been fairly consistent with my knitting. Although, it has taken a back seat to moving and blogging. Just think how amazing my talents would be if I had kept it up all the way from the 4th grade! It's never too late to try, try again.

For The Love of A House. A Renovation Style Magazine issue just came out that features her home, along with fabulous photos.

You can't see if very well, but the urn in the hallway is filled with marble grapes. Stunning in mass.

After seeing this I really want an abandoned wasp nest. I'll keep my eyes open.

Abandoned, though, to be sure! We certainly have the wasps out here in the country.

This makes me want to go hiking, well a little anyway. There is a beautiful photo of this in the magazine.

I don't know where I got this photo, but it's photos like this that make me want to start new collections. Uh oh! That's a problem.

Tailgate Pasta

I was going to post this recipe for a Tortellini Salad that I made for our Tailgate Party on Saturday. I had so much to do and pack that I didn't take adequate photos. So, these are my only shots of the salad. Sorry about that. All this to say, that it is still a fabulous, easy pasta salad to feed a crowd.

Tortellini Salad

2 (16 oz) bags frozen cheese tortellini

1 head broccoli, cut into flowerettes

2 green peppers, diced

1 or 2 zucchini, sliced

3 large tomatoes, chopped

1 lb. mushrooms, sliced

16 oz can small, ripe pitted olives

1 lb provolone, cubed

12 oz hard salami, cubed (no peppercorns)

1 cup (or more) grated parmesan cheese

Italian Dressing

The day before cook tortellini, rinse in cold water. Drain well. Toss with 1/2 bottle dressing. Cover and chill. Next day, add remaining ingredients. Toss with parmesan cheese. You can add more dressing, if desired.

Makes a very large amount and can be halved or items left out.

I made this without some of the veggies and the salami. We were already having several other things. The menu included cold fried chicken, a slaw salad (no mayo), my pasta salad, chips, apples, homemade cookies, water, soda, tea. They also got goodie bags full of necessities.

Thanks to a friend, you can see almost all the crowd!

Maynard's Cookies

I really haven't the foggiest idea who Maynard is.

Whoever he is, he makes a great chocolate chip cookie. I got this recipe from my MIL years ago. It's my DD2's favorite cookie recipe. I'm making these today for our tailgate lunch on Friday that I told you about here. I also had an "interesting" morning and chocolate chip cookie dough helped distract me a little.

MAYNARD'S CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES

1 c margarine

1 c sugar

1 c brown sugar

2 eggs

2 tsp vanilla

3 c flour

1 c oatmeal

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp salt

1/2 lb chocolate chips (I use more, maybe 10 oz)

Mix margarine and sugars; add eggs and vanilla. Stir in remaining ingredients and mix well. Bake at 358* for 8-10 minutes on ungreased cookie sheets. Makes 4-5 dozen.

Goodies for Girls

I'm getting ready for the Women Of Faith conference next weekend. There are 30 ladies in our group. I've been using my very remedial Photoshop skills for little gifts. I would have NO skills, except I took a little free class from Kim Klassen. I'll definitely be taking more. I made these tags to embellish some plain white envelopes. I know they're simple, but I'm pretty proud of them. I used instructions for printing from Jane.

You just tape the tags on top of the printed design on the paper and run it through the printer again.

I used vintage ribbon, swiss lace and a little "locker" pin to hold it together. I wanted red tape, but you can't find it in stores, only on line.

The 30 bags are finished. I posted about them here.

We're making food for a tailgate party at lunch. I took this photo on my iPhone then played with it on Photoshop to make the invitations.

Homemade cookies are for dessert.

My work is done, except for baking some more cookies and a pasta salad. I love making things a little more special. I hope they enjoy our weekend!

I read a blog post by Deb, about her "new" speed e whipper"recently. I hopped right onto etsy and found one for myself. If I ever really "need" whipped cream, it would only be a little. This gadget is perfect.

I know I show these a lot. Well, at least I'm using my cool waffle maker.

DH is fuzzy these days. He usually is after his big hike. This year, 68 miles in the Sierra's. He deserved a few chocolate waffles. I need to put some weight back onto him. Of course, I had some too.

I had heard about Spoonflower, but had never really spent much time there.

Until recently when a blog I read, House Wren Studio, asked her followers to stop by and vote.

Spoonflower is a design-your-own fabric site.

They have contests where you can vote for your favorite design.

Charlotte entered the contest where the design had to do with coffee. Below is her design. Isn't it adorable? Unfortunately she didn't win the contest, but I love it. It doesn't hurt that it has one of my favorite color combinations, red and aqua.

You can buy yardage of your favorite designs out of several different types of fabrics. I searched out kitchen designs and saved a few of my favorites to show you. Tomorrow they are having a free swatch day. Check out the details at their blog. Be prepared to spend some time. SO FUN!

Master Bedroom

I thought I'd give you an update on how our Master Bedroom is coming along. Above the bed are photos and maps of Harwichport, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. A few years ago we would rent a cottage and vacation there during the summers. That was before we moved back to the West Coast. It was a little tricky getting the pictures to work together. It's a work in progress. The Seahorse pillow is from Pottery Barn.

This photo was taken before the crown moulding was installed.

I also think a bench would be nice at the foot of the bed. Haven't found one I like yet.

I found this old, peely buoy on Ebay. I think the colors look great on the mantle.

Evidently, I haven't taken pictures of my painted bookshelves. It's not terribly exciting, just another part of the room. I have yet to balance out the pictures above the bed. I'm still searching for the right thing. My husband didn't think my oar was "just the thing". Next thing are some linen drapes and someday a more comfortable chair. Thanks for stopping by!

I decided to make some totes for 30 ladies that are going to Women of Faith in September. We're going to give them their tickets and information in totes made just for them. I'm using these Martha bags as inspiration. You can find the directions here. Since I'm making thirty, I'm keeping it simple.

Here are the samples I made for my daughter and me.

I loved these simple totes from Michaels. Their in the kid craft section on $2.00 a piece.

The most difficult part was flipping the letters. Even though it was an obvious option on my software, it wouldn't enable me to flip them. My smart DD2 figured it out for me. We worked around it.

What do you think? Wouldn't you enjoy receiving a simple little bag like these?

Come Take A Walk With Me

I take my iPhone with me on my walks. Basically I keep it on me for security, but it comes in handy for photos. Although, it wouldn't defend me against coyotes or snakes. I should've started a little earlier since we had a foggy morning and it was really cool. As soon as I got a few yards down the street, or was it up the street, the clouds moved on out.

There were a lot of animals out today.

He came over to say "Hi". I think he was wanting a treat.

This guy was sporting sunglasses.

These animals are all from different ranches.

I have fond memories of climbing Mimosa trees.

These geese were squawking pretty loud as I approached. I'm glad they were behind the fence.

You can't see him, but there's a cute horse in that left window. He was eating breakfast.

The burros were busy eating too. Hope you enjoyed the walk. The hills are killers, but as you can tell, I stopped occasionally for Kodak moments.

Shopping Rocks

DD2 and I went rock shopping today. We sort of felt like we were on the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland. Maybe it was my driving.

I think rocks are so beautiful.

Who knew there were SO MANY different kinds?

We're working on our hardscape plan. Sunset magazine has great inspiration photos.

Young Love

We went to our second wedding in one week yesterday. This one was held in the Richard M. Nixon Library courtyard.

The reception was held at the groom's family home, my cousin is the groom's Dad.

There was a lot of celebrating. I only had my phone to capture it, but it was beautiful!

Choices, Choices

I went to the best place for fun knobs in search of the perfect choice for my new Entertainment Center. Well, Anthropologie, of course! I brought home several to choose from, but the one I wanted the most was not in the store. They had to be shipped to me. Which they got wrong, so I had to reorder. So, now I have LOTS of knobs and will have to return many. This one is the top contender that I couldn't see in person.

I think the brass and tarnish will look great with the gray bead board. We'll see.

Here is the knob in person. It is white, not gray. Sorry for the blurry picture.
I'm using my point and shoot and can't get a good clear picture of it.

These are the ones I brought home to try out.

The left yellow one probably won't work, but I do have other gold in the room.

I had played with the idea of painting the bead board a pale gold color.

This middle one, Mother of Pearl, is in second place with it's brass, cream and hints of gray. I thought I'd also show you that I got a little inspiration from Joan at For The Love of a House for my cabinetry.
Isn't it beautiful?

I was already planning on the arched tops and the blue gray background, but her cabinet made me think to put the arch on the bottom as well. I love it! Thank you Joan!

Which one do you like? I'll keep you posted on what I pick.

Chili Cookoff

My husband's office had a Chili Cook Off last week. He asked me to make some chili. Little did I know that he also had to decorate his chef's hat. He gave me free reign. I bet he regretted that later. I wrote HOT and SPICY on the brim along with some flames. Then I attached a "tassel" of veggies; green onion, garlic bulb and a jalapeno. If nothing else, we got a good laugh out of it. Isn't he a good sport?

Our chili didn't win. It was all gone though. So that tells you something. The guy who won and smoked Tri-tip for his chili. I would've liked to have tasted that. That would've been difficult to compete with. My husband had the best hat though. Evidently he had to model it for pictures.

Out of Season

I had a friend come over for a visit. So, very last minute, I threw together a centerpiece for my island.

You can tell the fabric strawberries, but the other ones are fakeola. I rescued old outdated spice cans when we cleaned out my MIL's pantry for her move. The big can is a vintage label applied to a new can from the Kane County Flea Market in St. Charles, IL. The colors of the Farm Chicks cookbook fit in perfectly. I know it's past strawberry season since all our strawberry stands are closed, but it's still summer! Strawberries mean summer!

Progress!

If you'll remember, I've been playing with paint (4 colors sampled) and working with contractors to get an entertainment center built and brighten up this dark room. We finally some progress to share!

I shared with you a few weeks ago about Sherwin Williams' new line of paint collections by HGTV. I used this and found it very helpful, even though I didn't follow it 100%. You can see my post here.

I ended up using Sherwin Williams Kilim Beige on the walls. It wasn't in the collection, but was a little warmer than Accessible Beige. Sometimes in different light it has a hint of green, which wasn't in my plan, but I think I still like it.

All the white cabinetry is Dover White. It matched the existing fireplace really well.

I used Sedate Gray for the bead board on the back of the cabinets. The cabinetry had just been finished the night before this photo and knobs are being ordered.

The morning is the only time there is sun in this room because of the balcony overhang.

These colors are much more "us". Looks like I may be painting the rest of the main floor to match.

Well, somebody will, probably not me. I guarantee the TV will be installed this weekend and decorating will commence!

I thought I'd share a few things I've been enjoying on the internet and design magazines lately.

Really pretty things.

1. BHLDN's limoncello lace dress. So beautiful, and SO EXPENSIVE! I think my youngest daughter would look lovely in this, maybe in a deep blue. It doesn't come that way, but I can dream. Maybe with a few pounds off, I could pull it off. Well, again, I can dream. Let's look at things that don't have to fit.

2. Renovation Style Fall Issue has a story about Pandy Agnew and her gorgeous, small home. Her shop sells these beautiful chandeliers. In the story, I love the way she hung them with rope. Might have to copy that one.

3. After cutting up old magazines I came across some bookshelves with these mounted above them. DH thinks it's too late for us to do this since the crown moulding is installed. I'm holding out for an electrician to give me hope. We'll see. Check it out at Hinson Lighting.

4. I don't know what it is about me and lighting this week. Here's another beauty that I may not be able to resist. You can even find fun things at Pottery Barn Teen!

5. This living room from House Beautiful makes me want a fig tree! I actually love the cover photo the best. The table with all the binoculars! So creative. I probably have enough binoculars at my house for a little display like this. We'd always know where to find them, don't you think? Do you suppose a fig tree from Home Depot would work? You can see the entire house here.

Fresh Peach Salad

Isn't summer eating just the best? I love all the fresh, fun salad's that I can make or eat.

This week I tried a new combination for me.

I used arugula, grilled chicken, green onions, broccoli, fresh peaches, gorgonzola cheese and toasted soy nuts. Then I drizzled a little Newman's Own Low Fat Sesame Ginger dressing. It was SO good and just hit the spot. What fun salad combinations have you made lately?
