Floral Fridays

It just so happens that Floral Friday lands on May 1st this year.  So, it just fits that I send you all virtual May baskets.  I hope you have a wonderful weekend.  I am going on a trip to meet some college girlfriends to celebrate our combined "BIG" birthdays.  I'll bring back pictures!

Paint Project

I'm joining the Procrastinator's Party at Melissa's Blog, The Inspired Room.  I have been procrastinating with these chairs for a long time.  You can tell that I had already started tearing them apart.  These first two chairs were $15 a piece from a thrift store.  They had seriously UGLY fabric.

I've had this little chair for a long time.  When I bought it in the 1990's the woven seat had broken and been covered with a leather seat.  After years of use, it broke also.  I have a plan to repair it without having to weave a new seat.  That reveal you'll have to wait for.  I think it's going to be white.
I bought this pretty chair at an estate sale.  I think this one is for sure going to be black.
I've probably bitten off more than I can chew in two weeks, especially since I'm going out of town twice in those two weeks.  Well, I'm hoping to finish one chair, at the very least.  No fabric or foam has been bought yet for any of these.  YIKES!  My husband will be thrilled to get these out of the garage.  You know we store everything in our garages in California.

Fabulous Food

I just made this really great salad for dinner.  In fact, I'm still eating it as I type.  The greens are Arugula, which is seriously my favorite salad green.  I steamed some green beans, sliced some strawberries and green onion.  Topped it with blue cheese, some shredded Asiago and pine nuts.  Actually, I forgot to add the pine nuts until half-way through the salad, so they aren't in the photo.  I topped it all off with my favorite bottled dressing, Newman's Own Low Fat Sesame Ginger Dressing.  I was going to make lemon vinegarette, but was hungry.  How is it that I can NEVER spell that right the first time? Actually, I think there's more than one way to spell viniagrette.  Just checked Websters.  It's really too bad that I'm eating this all alone tonight. DH would've liked it.  I think he's at the Smithsonian tonight, poor guy.

I forgot to post a recipe that I made last week for incredible pork tenderloin.  It was Fig and Blue Cheese Stuffed Pork Tenderloin from Cooking Light.  You can get the recipe here.  This was so easy to make and turned out great enough for company.  I have another tear sheet from Cooking Light that gave some other great combinations; apricots and brie or cranberries and chevre.  They all sound fabulous!

Pretty in Pink

Who says that pink only belongs in a little girl's bedroom?  I think these rooms are beautiful without being too sweet.

I tried to talk my MIL into painting her kitchen pink to go with all her beautiful Limoges china years ago.  I don't think she ever did it.  It would've been beautiful.  Because I have so much furniture that is not neutral, I would have to start over in order to embrace a new color palette. But, it sure would be fun to try.  Would you consider using pink in your main living rooms?

The Truth Is Out!

Okay, so I admit it.  I turned 50 yesterday.  There you have it.  There's a candle for every decade represented.  I wouldn't want to set off the smoke alarms.  My sweet husband went to great lengths to buy presents.  Actually the wrapping was more difficult for him, I believe.  He didn't even know where the wrapping paper was.  I came home to the Christmas wrapping box out. Poor guy.

My sweet daughter baked her first cake from scratch totally by herself.  It's a German pound cake with my grandmother's fudge frosting on top.  YUMMY!  It's the kind of frosting that you scrape the pan of every possible remnant afterwards.
Here's another truth.  The kitchen was/is a mess.  And I'm having pound cake for breakfast today.  Isn't it pretty much like coffee cake? Yep, I think so.

Floral Fridays

{country home}
Don't you think this darling bowl should be full of Strawberry Shortcake?  It is strawberry season you know?  You can make wonderful shortcake by adding 2 Tablespoons of sugar to this recipe.  YUMMY!  Have a beautiful weekend!

Bueno!

I'm forgoing my usual Floral Friday post to bring you a luscious Italian lunch!  Several of the ladies from our neighborhood Bible Study took a "field trip" over the mountains into Orange County for the specific purpose of enjoying lunch at Mangia Bene! Ristorante in Laguna Niguel, CA.

You can tell by all the boxes and bags that we took food home for dinner, too.
They slipped up on me and sang Happy Birthday.  Not till Sunday, girls!
Butternut squash ravioli with cherries and pine nuts!
I had risotto with sausage, peppers, mushrooms and peas.  It was SO GOOD!
Only about half of us got to go.  Next time, girls!
Sheryl on the left and her husband are the owners of this lovely restaurant.  Nina and I are anticipating our lovely lunch.  See girls, I DO reflect light.

Jenny is the matriarch of this Italian restaurant family.  She had a famous restaurant in St. Louis for years.  Mangia Bene! uses her recipes.

Thimble Collection

I absolutely LOVE this photo from Curious Sofa.  This makes me really want to collect thimbles.   I'm not sure I should collect thimbles because I really love this photo, though.  That seems sort of backwards.  I actually sew, more so in the past, to be honest.  I think I have, or my parents have, my grandmother's thimble.  As soon as I start collecting thimbles, I'll forget which one is hers.  The one I've always used is actually leather.  So, it's not so cute and collectible worthy.   Is it bad to collect something for reasons of display and decorating?  Oh my goodness, I'm making too much out of this.

On a more fun note, my parents who live in the Kansas City area have actually bought me a gift card to Curious Sofa for my birthday!  I don't have my next visit planned, but I'm excited!  So, I'm just going to drag out this BIG birthday as long as possible.  Visit Debbie from Curious Sofa at her blog here.

* Evidently this photo is not from Curious Sofa.  If it is yours, please let me know so I can give you credit!

Spring is for the Birds

Birds are a very common decorating element, especially in the Spring.  They're pretty active in my backyard at the moment too.  Here is a beautiful painting from Ballard Designs.

Pottery Barn has these pictures and pillows.

Here is a beautiful mirror from Ballard Designs.
These cute little handmade birds are from Anthropologie.  You will be surprised at their price!

This cute little pillow is off of etsy.com here.
Here are some of my own little birds.  This one is from Home Goods.
I think I got this one at The Farmer's Wife before I started working there.

I just bought this little wire cloche at work on Friday.  I think it looks perfect perched on my urn.
I actually have a few more birds around, but enough is enough.  How do you use birds in your decorating?

I love these sweet herb images from Country Home.  I've always wanted a beautiful herb garden.  I began my first herb garden in a wooden box found on an early morning run (back in the olden days) on trash day.  Since then I've had many pots and plots.  In our little yard now, they're in whiskey barrels that I sometimes forget about.  But, thanks to automatic sprinklers, they survive without much TLC.

Basil is probably my favorite.  I love pesto, but you need ALOT of basil to make it.
Chives is probably one herb that I use the most.  Who doesn't like chives in their baked potatoes?
I actually have 4 Rosemary bushes at the moment.   Out here in SoCal, they're part of my regular landscaping.  I just cut back two of them and filled up the "green" dumpster.  The other two are slated for next week.
I grow herbs to cook with mainly.  And, I don't seem to do that enough.  They are definitely charming and aromatic plants.  I think they'd be worth growing just for sweet little arrangements like these.  It think I'll go pick a bunch. . .

Hot Fudge Sauce

Her identity is hidden in order to protect the innocent, or guilty as the case may be.

We had a Sundae Social for our church women this week.  Basically the ladies met to talk (duh) and made homemade sundaes.  We provided the ice cream and everybody brought a topping. Fresh strawberries are in season here so they were yummy.  Someone brought broken up Oreos and another brought homemade carmel sauce.  I made hot fudge sauce.  I used a recipe from Better Homes and Gardens in 1999!

I had 5 recipes to chose from, I'm still not sure which is the best. I think I need to make them all in one sitting and try them all out.  What do you think? How else will I know which one is the best?

Hot Fudge Sauce

1/2 c unsweetened cocoa powder
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup packed dark brown sugar
3 Tbsp butter
1/2 cup whipping cream

In a small bowl stir together cocoa powder and sugars, set aside.  In a heavy small saucepan melt butter with cream over low heat, stirring constantly.  Cook and stir over medium heat about 3 minutes or until mixture bubbles around edges.  Add sugar mixture.  Cook, stirring constantly, for 1 to 2 minutes more until sugar is dissolved and mixture is smooth and thickened.  Serve immediately.  Or, cover and store in a refrigerator up to one week.  To reheat on stovetop, in a small heavy saucepan stir sauce frequently over low heat.  To reheat in microwave place chilled topping in a 2-cup measure.  Microwave for 1 to 2 minutes till heated through.

Hardware Organization

Yeah, I found it! This is from BHG in 2007. I thought the ideas were pretty creative. Here is another use for forks, similar to The Nester's post a few days ago.

This idea below is my favorite. I actually bought some of these drawer pulls to try this. Problem is they don't really show you that it's not on a wall. These pulls have long screws that hold on the pull. They need to be put on to a picture frame, which if you look closely, I think they've done.
This photo is more difficult to see.  If you click on the photo you can see the details.  There are several frames that are used as bulletin boards. They covered foam core or cork with pretty papers and fabrics. I'm going to do something similar over our desk. Wait and see!
